My Lists: 15 favorite songs from the second half of 2014

Yes, yes. I forgot to write up my list of favorite songs for the second half of 2014. As I've said in my last post, I got super lazy last month and into the new year. So here I am, trying to squeeze this post before the first month ends completely.

As was with the first half of 2014, the second half of the year was just as kpop-filled and my playlist just kept getting bigger and bigger. And so, without further babbling, here are my 15 favorite songs from the second half of 2014.

Apink - "Luv"

Taemin - "Danger"

Super Junior - "This Is Love"

Sistar - "Touch My Body"

Winner (Mino Solo) - "I'm Him"

Taemin - "Ace"

Kara - "Mamma Mia"

BTS - "Danger"

Beast - "12:30"

GD x Taeyang - "Good Boy"

30 K-Pop Questions Challenge

Because I'm bored but too lazy to write out my K-Pop Year End Awards right now, here's a quick survey I found floating around tumblr. I promise to get back to the Year End Awards before the week is over.

Without further ado, here we go.

1. "Breathe" by Miss A OR "Breathe" by G-Dragon?

Aigoo. Being a major VIP, I'm loath to say Miss A, but it's true. This song is awesome.

2. "Without You" by U-KISS OR "Without U" by 2PM?

Since I don't even know the one by U-KISS, I'mma have to go with the 2PM song.

3. "Lies" by BIG BANG OR "Lies" by T-Ara?

Big Bang. Duh.

 4. BEAST OR MBLAQ?

Noooooo. I can't choose. I... will have to do this diplomatically and check last.fm to see which group I actually listen to more.

And the answer is... Beast. You can all safely assume it's all due to "Fiction" and it's true. That song is killer.

5. BEAST OR SHINee?

SHINee. Hands down.

6. KARA OR SNSD?

Again, I will have to confer with last.fm - and, Kara it is.

7. SNSD OR After School?

SNSD.

8. KARA OR T-Ara?

KARA.

9. 4Minute OR 2NE1?

2NE1

10. BoA OR Lee Hyori?

Hmmm... God, I love Hyori but I'mma have to go with BoA on this one.

11. Jay Park OR Taeyang?

Taeyang.

12. Se7en OR Rain?

Rain. Go Rain. It's Rain. It's raining.

13. Son Dambi OR Lee Hyori?

Lee Hyori.

14. Outsider OR E.Via?

I'm sorry... Who?

15. Miss A OR SISTAR?

Miss A.

16. INFINITE OR Teen Top?

Infinite.

17. Jia from Miss A OR Victoria from F(x)?

Jia. Girl can sing, rap, and dance.

18. Junsu from TVXQ OR Junsu from 2PM?

Xia Junsu, for sure.

19. HyunA from 4Minute OR CL from 2NE1?

CL.

20. Taecyeon from 2PM OR TOP from BIG BANG?

My man, TOP.

21. Goo Hara from KARA OR Yoona from SNSD?

Eh... Slim pickings, eh? Let's go with Yoona.

22. Daesung from BIG BANG OR Onew from SHINee?

YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME. Onew is my SHINee bias. Daesung isn't my Big Bang bias but he's up there. Good grief. Can I have them both? I want them both.

23. Bom from 2NE1 OR Taeyeon from SNSD?

Eh... Bom then.

24. Changmin from 2AM OR Changmin from TVXQ?

Max Changmin.

25. Taemin from SHINee OR Dongho from U-KISS?

Taemin! He's my baby.

26. Hyoyeon from SNSD OR Minzy from 2NE1?

Uh... Minzy's the better singer. But Hyoyeon's the better dancer. Uh oh. I'll have to go with Hyo, I think.

27. Hongki from FT Island OR Yonghwa from CNBlue?

Noooooooooo. I can't. I absolutely love Hongki and Yonghwa, both. I choose not to choose. Sorry.

28. Kikwang from BEAST OR Taeyang from BIG BANG?

Uhhh... If you'd asked me this 3 years ago, I would've said Taeyang. Better hair, better fashion, better vocal quality. But I'm not quite sure anymore. Taeyang needs a timeout.

While I can't outright choose Taeyang, I don't think I can choose Kikwang either. Hmmm...

29. Nana from After School OR Tiffany from SNSD?

Only because I know next to nothing when it comes to After School, save for UEE, I'll have to pick Tiffany.

30. Jokwon from 2AM OR Key from SHINee?

My goddess, Key.

The Kpop Superfan Member Test!

During last week's Kpop Music Monday on EYK, instead of doing their usual music video review, they put up this Kpop Superfan Test instead. And guess what? I was bored enough to do it.

So basically, they posted a list of all these kpop groups and how many members each one has and we're supposed to try and name all the members. One point for every correct answer.

I tried my luck and got a 106/124. Which, according to their scoring system, tells me "101-119 points: Holy smokes, Kpop guru! What else do you know??!!"

I honest to goodness wrote down my answers without the use of Google. I swear it. And my answers are as follows:

The thing is though... I may know people's names, but not necessarily know who they are in the group specifically. Ask me to match the name to a face for groups like EXO and Teen Top and I'll be at a total loss. And like, I only know the name of B1A4's Gongchan because I see it on tumblr and it sounds like Gongcha, which is an awesome bubble tea place. I do not know how U-Kiss' Kiseop looks like either. Or the members of FT Island who are neither Hongki nor Jonghoon.

But also, I can't believe I missed out on some of the idols who I do know. Like, how can I not have remembered Baro? He's the only B1A4 member I actually know (thanks to We Got Married). And how is there only one other member of Infinite that I'm missing? And Kara! What's the name of the 5th girl from Kara? I know all their faces but can't quite remember her name. Damnit.

Have you tried to take the test? How did you fare?

My Lists: 10 favorite female dancers in k-pop

It's been awhile since I've made a list and so today I'll be listing down my top ten favorite female dancers in k-pop.

Having been trained to dance (ballet, street, jazz, cheerleading, folk, you name it - I've probably done it... oh, except break dancing, that's one thing I can't do) since the age of 3, I'm a huge fan of k-pop idols who can dance their butts off. Luckily, there are many to choose from. And here are my top ten, in no particular order.

Lee Hyori - Hyori is awesome. She may not be k-pop's best singer or dancer, but the girl can move and she's got huge charisma. She steps on stage and immediately commands attention.

Minzy - 2NE1's Minzy is definitely one of k-pop's most notable dancers of late. Though she may be repetitive in her moves, and at time messy, she's definitely one of those people who are so at ease with their body that they make dancing look easy.

Nicole - If I had a Kara bias, it would probably be Nicole. This girl may not be the best technical dancer in k-pop, but she's certainly one of its best movers. There's a difference but Nicole does it in a way that you don't notice it.

Hyuna - I'm not 4Minute's biggest fan, nor Hyuna's, for that matter. But it's hard to deny that this girl can dance. And when she takes to the stage, whether as a solo act or with her group (or project duo with Beast's Hyunseung), it's hard to look elsewhere.

Fei - Fei is definitely on this list, especially after winning the 3rd season of the Korean franchise of Dancing with the Stars. I'm beyond glad that Fei is finally getting the attention she deserves after having been overshadowed by her miss A co-members since their debut. This girl is so awesome, not only did she win DWTS, she also made the top 2 of Master Chef Korea Celebrity Edition in the same year. That doesn't really signify on this list, but still... a girl who can dance and cook! It's like we're the same person. Ha.

Hyoyeon - As SNSD's lead dancer, there's no missing Hyoyeon when the girls hit those dance breaks. As hard as it is to stand out in a group of nine pretty ladies, it's still with effortless grace and hard-hitting moves that Hyoyeon manages to captures our attention.

Jia - It says so much of the group when Jia is the second miss A member on my list, and I'm not even done with this group yet. Jia is beyond amazing - not only is she a superb dancer, her flexibility still leaves my jaw hanging. Fantastic singer, amazing rapper, and flawless dancer, Meng Jia is out to rule the k-pop world.

*This video isn't a solo, as I couldn't find an awesome solo video of Jia dancing. But this video is of Jia, Fei and Wonder Girls member Lim.

Min - Is it any surprise that bffs Hyoyeon and Min made waves as kids dancing in Little Winners? Min is a little dancing prodigy who trained for years in the US before debuting under JYPE. The third miss A member on my list, Min is also my new miss A bias. This changes from time to time, but it doesn't even matter. They're all awesome. But Min does hip-hop like nobody's business.

BoA - This girl is a goddess. She sings like an angel but dances like a beast. Is that even possible? Apparently so. Her moves are so precise, so clean, so flawless. She's only 26 but has been in the business for almost 13 years. She's a child prodigy who has grown so much and helped shape k-pop from its early days. Way back when I had no idea what k-pop even was, I already knew who BoA was. She's a huge name, and rightly so.

Kahi - It's no surprise that before Kahi debuted with girl group After School she used to dance back-up for a lot of big names in k-pop, most notably BoA. I honestly knew next to nothing about Kahi prior to watching this one video that made me go, holy shit. Girl is a dance machine.

Honorable Mention: Park Shin-hye - Not an idol but an amazing dancer. So much so that I can't believe she's not a pop star.

What about you? Who are your favorite dancers?

My Lists: 10 favorite k-pop female idol groups

I've previously discussed my love for male idol groups, and now it's time to list down my favorite female idol groups.

Admittedly, trying to come up with this list was ten times more difficult than figuring out the male counterpart. Not because there's a lack of amazing girl groups in Seoul but easily due to the fact that, as a girl, I'm drawn to the guy groups more. Nonetheless, there are flawless girl groups in abundance in the k-pop world and I've listed down my favorites.

Note that, much like my list of favorite male idols, this list is by no means a be all and end all of my favorite k-pop girl groups ever. They change from time to time. It could change by tomorrow. Seriously.

After School - This is the first group to debut with an "admissions and graduation" concept in Korea, where older members eventually graduate from the group and newer girls are then added. Known for their dancing just as much as their singing, After School's music concept is very much like the Pussycat Dolls - catchy tunes, amazing long legs, captivating choreography.

Secret - The group was first introduced to me via Sunhwa's spot on We Got Married. Admittedly, I know almost nothing about this girl group aside from the fact that they have four members and that they produce predominantly retro pop music. But, I have seen some of their music videos, and I have to say, "Poison" is an addictive little earworm that will not let you go. And every time I listen to the song, I'm dancing to the choreography in my head.

Girls' Generation - You can't even begin to discuss k-pop without mentioning this 9-member girl group. Girls' Generation is probably the biggest name in Korean girl groups. With their sweet and innocent image, this group has been making uncle fans happy since 2007. When they first debuted, their music was predominantly bubblegum pop. They've since grown and matured into successful young ladies who now churn out addictive electro-dance and modern R&B tracks.

Wonder Girls - Known more for their biggest song to date, 2008 worldwide hit single "Nobody," the Wonder Girls have been consistently churning out fun pop songs with a retro twist since 2007. But despite being the biggest name in girl groups back in 2008-2009, their popularity in Korea started to dwindle when they left Seoul to promote widely in the US market. So while they toured internationally, initially with the Jonas Brothers and eventually on their own world tour, the other up-and-coming girl group, Girl's Generation, slowly took over the local scene. Nonetheless, the Wonder Girls returned to Korea in 2011 armed with several hit singles up their sleeves.

Kara - Once upon a time, I thought I couldn't stand this group. Turns out I was dead wrong. Now my problem with them is that I could never quite figure out which one of the Kara girls I like the most. I like them all, and all for several different reasons. And while I never considered them one of my favorite groups, I eventually realized that the songs by Kara that I do like, I like a lot. Like, I listen to them all the time. With the dance steps haunting me all day. Songs like "Step," "Mister," and "Pandora" are on constant rotation on my playlist. So maybe they ought to be higher on this list.

f(x) - To be honest, a lot of k-pop groups are introduced to me via variety shows. I don't go out looking for new music. I hardly ever watch the music programs. I watch a lot of variety and drama though. So it's no surprise that I found out about f(x) through Victoria's participation in We Got Married. I came for Victoria and stuck around for Amber. In my opinion, Amber - in spite of her tomboy image - is still one of their prettiest members. She's also the coolest. Oh, and Sulli is adorable. She really is. Like, can I adopt her?

Sistar - Gotta love Hyorin. Her voice is beyond compare and is a rare find in the idol world. And personally, I would attribute Sistar's success to Hyorin. While I love Bora (she's gorgeous and her raspy voice suits her rapping so perfectly), Hyorin is just everything you'd ever want in a pop star  While she's not typically beautiful, she's captivating enough that it's hard to watch anyone else when she's on stage.

Brown Eyed Girls - In all honesty, I'm all about Ga-in. Seriously. From the moment I laid eyes on her on We Got Married down to her special appearance in Psy's "Gentleman," she's just proving to me how awesome she is. Not just coz she's gorgeous, but also because the girl can sing and dance like a boss. She's sexy and classy at the same time. She's comfortable with her sexuality. And she's a big dork. We know she can't live without her eyeliner, and that's okay. We love her anyway. And we love the rest of the BEG members as well - them of the insane vocal range and risque music videos. These girls mean business and we love them for it.

miss A - I just love miss A. Min and Jia, to be quite specific. Although, all four of them are amazing talents, and Suzy and Fei are super pretty, but Min and Jia are badass. Their stage presence and charisma can be felt a mile away. What intrigues me most about the group, however, is how they can go from cute to badass  so seamlessly. So it's, therefore, not surprising that they can go from teen pop to urban to sexy R&B and back again without being disconcerting.

2NE1 - While aegyo is fine from time to time, and depending on who's trying to pull it off, I'd rather a girl be fierce than cute. So, needless to say, my favorite girl group in all of k-pop is 2NE1. CL is the badass leader, rapper and vocalist. Park Bom is the charming main vocalist with killer legs. Dara is the adorable yet curiously sexy fresh-vocalist. Minzy, the ero-maknae, is the illest dancer whose vocal ability has improved so much since their debut in 2009. 2NE1 caught my eye early on, not just because I've been a fan of Dara's from her showbiz career in the Philippines, but also because they were the first Korean girl group whose concept didn't scream out "look at us, we're cute!" 2NE1, jjang!

Who are your favorite female idol groups? Let me know!
