Post-holiday Blues

I'M BAAACK!

Well, I wasn't really gone gone. I was here, just really lazy to give this blog any thought. Firstly, the holidays were insane. As it always is. But then reality hit me like a ton of bricks and I had a rough time trying to catch up with all the emails in my inbox. Secondly, while I have been watching dramas, I haven't really been up to date with most of them.

I think the only drama I've finished since the holidays started was Pinocchio (which I loved, maybe not as much as I Hear Your Voice, but it was still awesome). I have 4 more episodes to go before I can put Liar Game totally behind me. I'm only at episode 13 of Birth of a Beauty. And I'm, like, 5 minutes into the first episode of Healer. I still have Misaeng and Valid Love lined up! I don't know when I will ever be able to watch those because new dramas are already starting to come out of the woodwork. Hyde, Jekyll, Me starts today. Well, it started last night but subs come out today. While I'm not the biggest fan of Hyun Bin in the same arrogant chaebol role, I really do like him as an actor and I love Han Ji-min, so it would be terrible to miss out on this one.

Lately though, I haven't been of the mindset to watch dramas. Mostly, I watch variety shows. And even then, not religiously. I've watched some Running Man here and there. The Kim Woo-bin + Lee Hyun-woo episode was awesome. I'm currently in the middle of the latest one with Seo Kang-joon, Hong Jong-hyun (soooo cute, this guy), Nam Joo-hyuk and 2 other flower boys. I've seen a couple of episodes of Superman Returns because I slept over at my friend's place over the weekend and that is almost all she'll watch. Oh, and I'm now all caught up on We Got Married.

There are times though when I can't even sit still (or lie still, as the case may often be) long enough to even get started on a variety show episode. Sometimes I just jump from one kpop video to the next on youtube until I fall asleep. (Speaking of kpop, it's January. Where's that iKON debut?!) I should really force myself out of this slump...

On the upside, I've finished 2 books since Sunday - granted, both books are of the chic lit variety (one of them being a cliched young adult romance) - but still, reading is reading and I actually miss it. Maybe the thing that would push me to write more is to read more. So, yeah, that should be a new New Year's Resolution.

I've already committed to cutting down on carbs, most especially rice (Asians the world over gasp in horror), and unhealthy food, and so far I've been very diligent about it. I should add watch more dramas and read more books onto that list. Also, I should probably try to meet new people this year. Go out, hang out, live. Which, you might think, doesn't really go with the "watch more, read more" part of the resolutions, but I think it can be done. 2015, fighting!

Seoul, 기억하죠!

It's been awhile since our trip to Seoul and I realize I haven't said anything about it except for seeing BTS (which was one of the highlights but a very brief moment in my longest visit to the city so far). My friend and I stayed in Hongdae for about ten days and explored as much of Seoul as we could, only venturing out of the capital for Everland, Nami Island, and Petite France.

While it's been almost two years since my last trip to Korea, being back in Seoul felt comfortable and familiar. Finding my way around the subway system felt almost second nature. And I'm glad I know way more Korean now than I did during my last visits (first visit: hardly any; second visit: very limited) because it proved to help a lot in getting around and finding answers to our questions.

I remember trying to find a specific restaurant in Myeongdong that I had been to before that I wanted to visit again. I approached one of the tourist information people and asked my question in Korean. The lady confirmed with me if it was okay for her to answer in Korean as well and I nodded to her to go ahead. I was pretty proud of myself when I understood her instructions even though I didn't know each and every word she said.

Ordering food was 10 times easier. Being able to read road signs and maps that were purely in Korean increased efficiency tenfold. It also made people respond better to us - and that includes getting so much service from a lady in Namdaemun.

Also, a lot of the ahjummas found it fascinating to converse with foreigners in their own language. As soon as they realized I spoke a little Korean, they'd go and start very lengthy and animated conversations with me. On my part, of course, it was more of trying to catch words here and there and trying to figure out the gist of what they were saying. That's the best way to learn though.

In the winter of 2012, when I had gone to Seoul with my sisters, we met a very friendly ahjumma selling Hallyu souvenirs in Bukchon. My sisters and I engaged her in a very stilted conversation using whatever Korean I knew, plus the very limited English she could muster. Most of the conversation involved very grand hand gestures.

This time around, when I accompanied my friend to check out the Running Man and CN Blue memorabilia in the store, I was armed with better Korean skills. I asked her if she remembered me and told her that I had met her two years back with my sisters in tow. She said she did, I honestly don't think she did at that point, but she encouraged the conversation and asked me about my sisters' whereabouts and if I was studying in Seoul. Then I asked after her son, whom she had managed to tell me about last 2012, and if he was still living in New Zealand. The ahjumma was beyond shocked that I had remembered that small bit of trivia. "Gieokhane?!" she had exclaimed.

She then went looking for a Running Man 2015-2016 desk calendar. She said she wanted me to have it! I wasn't even buying anything and here she was shoving a $10-calendar at me. I tried pushing my luck a little further by asking if, since she was giving me a free calendar, instead of Running Man could she give me the Winner one instead. After jokingly giving me the side-eye, she said yes!

It's those small things that made my trip exceptionally memorable. Like when that one ahjumma in the Gwangjang Market suggested I try my shot at being an actress in Korea since I spoke their language. Believe you me, I walked out of that place with my head in the clouds!

I know my Korean language skills leave much to be desired, but the fact that a Korean colleague whom I had visited at our Gangnam office told me that my Korean was much better than his English (and he speaks good English!), then I think there's hope for me yet. Haha.

After a week and a half of walking and eating our way through Seoul (and surrounding areas in Gyeonggi-do), I was exhausted and cold enough to actually miss home but it was still depressing having to say goodbye. I'm not sure when I'll get to go back (a trip to Sydney must come first, my aunt insists) but here's to hoping that when I do, Seoul will remain as familiar as it had been this year. Also, I hope by then I would've upped my language game a bit more.

Sometimes life hands you a box of chocolate. Most times, these chocolates are handed out to others and you feel spurned. And okay, fine, also begrudgingly happy for them.

I go to Korea and I get a 5-second glimpse of BTS. Meanwhile, my friend goes to Korea and right out of the plane, bam!, EXO. And she has video and photo proof. UNFAIR.

You know how long the walk is from the arrivals gate to the airport exit? That takes enough time for people to pull out their phones for a few pics and a video. You know how short the walk is from a car parked by the pavement to a salon's front door? Too short.

Can you imagine the amount of screaming I did the moment I saw her message on Kakao Talk at like, 6 in the morning? My trip was just 2 weeks ahead of hers. How does she get so lucky to be at the airport when a bajillion idols were coming home from the 2014 MBC Korean Music Wave in Beijing? I have incredibly bad timing.

Belated Mini Freak Out

So I saw BTS last week.

This is so random and I don't even have proof, but I swear to the k-pop gods I saw the boys of Bangtan last week. I was with my friend in Seoul for about 10 days and on Wednesday last week, we decided to walk around Garosu-gil before heading to Samseong-dong to meet a Korean colleague of mine.

I had turned to my friend and said, "this is the time you need to keep your eyes peeled for celebrities." My friend doesn't know a lot of Korean celebrities, she's only watched a handful of dramas, and the only k-pop stars she knows are those who have guested on Running Man. "Tell me if you see anyone who remotely looks like a celebrity," I had said.

We were in and out of shops before we stumbled upon a group of both boys and girls with gigantic DSLR cameras with lenses THIS HUGE with them. But because they were not just a gaggle of high school girls, I had easily dismissed them with a "hmmm... maybe they're a photography club."

A PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB???

It wasn't till we had walked passed them when I suddenly turned about face and said to my friend, "or you know, they may very well be sasaeng fans." And as soon as we started walking back towards the crowd a huge black celebrity van parks by the pavement and the doors open. I kept thinking to myself, "Oh my god, who is this? Who is this? Do I know them?"

With my eyes wide open, I waited with bated breath.

The first guy stepped out of the car but I did not recognize who it was. Maybe it was the group of fans right in front of me, maybe it was the crazy thumping of my heart, but my facial recognition skills were going haywire. Another boy stepped out and he had hair as bright as the sun. I remember thinking to myself, "Nope, G-Dragon isn't blond right now." I was remembering precisely the god-awful curly brown 'do he sported during Paris Fashion Week and this wasn't it. "Who's blond? Who's blond right now?"

Then it struck me. I finally looked away from the hair and moved down to the face and I immediately recognized Rapmon. I'm not the biggest BTS fan, but for the past few months their music has been on my playlist more and more and I've been repeatedly cussing myself out for thinking Jungkook is the cutest thing ever (because that kid is a baby). And so the moment I realized it was BTS in front of me, I was completely out of it. So much so that the only one I really and thoroughly saw was Rapmon. And by the time I had gathered my wits, all of the boys had already walked into Franck Provost and it was over. I didn't even really see Jungkook. I mean, I saw him, but I didn't see see him.

I was so out of breath that my friend was just laughing at me and trying to take a picture of my spazzing out. Which is why we decided to park our things at the nearest coffee shop, which happened to be Hollys Coffee. We were seated at the second floor, right near the windows, and we noticed that an event was about to take place across the street. A store opening is my guess.

There were bodyguards in suits with walkie-talkies on hand by the entrance, and several civilians waiting at the sides with their camera phones at the ready. Up at Hollys Coffee, there were several guys and girls with huge DSLRs also parked by the window. I had no idea who to expect to show up for the event.

Unfortunately, I'd never find out. As it were, we were already late for our dinner schedule as we had originally intended to go to Samseong-dong via the subway. With a disappointed heart, we cabbed our way out of Garosu-gil to head over to COEX.

But, man, what an experience. Just randomly seeing k-pop stars on the streets is not something that happens to me all the time. Or like, ever. Good times.

Off to Seoul!

I've been quiet the past week or so even though I've been drowning under a pile of dramas and kpop stuff. It's just that I leave for Seoul tomorrow and things have been slightly insane around here. I keep thinking I'm forgetting to pack something... And then I had to squeeze THIS MUCH clothes and jackets into a tiny suitcase because we're flying cheap and check-in baggage is limited. Ugh.

Choosing which jacket to leave out was tedious.

I thought I was done packing... I wasn't.

So I went from regular sized suitcase to a slightly smaller one and I had to leave out 2 jackets. Like, I was already done packing when I thought of using the lighter suitcase. I hate that a huge chunk of baggage weight is usually the bag itself. So I had to re-pack everything into the lighter suitcase. Sooo not fun. Especially when it's scorching hot in this part of the world.

Even the actual suitcase got edited out.

Finally, yesterday, I was able to finish everything off. Here's to hoping I'm not forgetting anything...

I don't return till next Friday so I will probably be update-less for the next week and a half. I will come back with a shitload of photos to share though. So yay!

CNBLUE arrived in the country earlier today for their Can't Stop World Tour and Jong-hyun is looking fine. That haircut was long overdue and this new short 'do is gorgeous. I can't believe I'm not watching the concert tomorrow night.

On the other hand, I'm all set for Seoul and we leave in 3 weeks. This is what I gave up a bunch of k-pop concerts this year for. It'd better be worth it. I'm going to make it worth it.

My Lists: 10 things I miss most about Seoul

I'm booked for a trip to Seoul for autumn this year! I am beyond excited. Like, I have a feeling this trip is going to be awesome. (As if my previous 2 visits to Seoul have been anything less than awesome). For the first time ever, I'm traveling abroad with someone who isn't family. So that's bound to be interesting. Traveling together, as they say, is putting your friendship to the test. I don't know but I have a feeling we're gonna be pretty good during the 9-day trip. *crosses fingers*

My friend has never been to Korea before and is a fairly new k-drama/k-variety fan. How new? She watched her first drama last year. Which drama? Boys Over Flowers. She's that new. She eventually found Running Man on her own and has since marathoned the show, episode by episode, and is making her way through 2012's episodes by now. She's probably seen more episodes than I have.

Our upcoming trip (I know it's 6 months away but I can already feel it, okaaayyyy) will consist mostly of places I've already been to because it's my friend's first time, but I seriously don't mind. No one can possibly get sick of Hongdae and Myeongdong. I've added a handful of new places for me, like Nami Island! And Everland! And hopefully we get to watch a music show or two. *crosses fingers again*

There are just so many things I love about Seoul that I can't wait to experience again. Here's a rundown of my top 10 Seoul things, in no particular order.

1. Korean Barbecue - I've been to plenty Korean restaurants in my country. Most of them Korean-owned and as authentic as you can get outside of Korea. But, for some reason, nothing beats Korean food in Korea. Gimme some samgyupsal, kimchi jjigae, and sosa (soju + cider) and I'm a happy camper.

2. Korean Subways - Believe you me, no one appreciates the efficiency of the Korean rail system than a person who has to suffer commuting every single day in a city whose transportation infrastructure is probably one of the worst the world has seen. This is one of the pleasures Seoul has to offer that I tend to miss the very moment I have to get back on the Philippines' dreaded MRT.

3. Egg Bread - Mmmmm.... Gyeran bbang (계란빵) or egg bread is exactly what it sounds like. It's bread... with egg. Sounds simple, and it is. And sooo delish. There's an ahjussi selling them from a food truck in one of the alleys of Myeongdong and my sister and I once visited him thrice in a span of 4 days.

4. Nature in the City - Everyone thinks of Seoul as this busy, high-tech, concrete jungle - and for the most part, it's true. But, still, you're never 5 minutes away from some sort of natural space. Seoul is surrounded by mountains and this explains Seoulites' love for hiking and nature walks. Parks are everywhere, too. Along with the banks of the Han river and the restored Cheonggye stream, bodies of water aren't rare either.

5. Kitschy Cafés - I'm not a big coffee drinker but I somehow turn into one whenever I'm in Seoul. Not only because of their colder weather, but because the quaint little cafés keep appealing to the wannabe artist-writer in me. Cute little café in Hongdae? Gimme a Moleskin and toss me my quill, I'm going to drown in caffeine and write!

6. Street Art - For a city that boasts of its science and technological advancement, Seoul, ironically, has a lot of artists. From visual artists to buskers to fashion designers, Seoul is filled with them. It's no wonder that the mecca of artists boasts of street vandalism that looks like this:

7. Side Dishes - Banchan (반찬) refers to small dishes of food served along with cooked rice in Korean cuisine. Not only are they delicious, they are also free and refillable. Sometimes it means assorted kimchi and soy bean sprouts, sometimes it's spam and rolled omelettes. I could probably live well on banchan and rice alone.

8. Service - Free things a business gives out to customers are called "service" and is a very widely used marketing strategy over there. Whether it's free packets of body wash and face mask that come along with your purchases at Etude House, or the free serving of pretzels along with your sweet potato latte at Café Jass, these are all part and parcel of the Korean idea of service. Isn't that just awesome?

9.  Your favorite Korean artist on everything - In the land of k-pop and k-drama stars, of course it's going to be filled with all your oppas gracing billboards everywhere and advertising everything from the newest Nintendo game to an online shopping site. Sometimes, they're also on your soda cup at Lotteria.

10. Street Food - Notice how many items on this list are food related? I'm such a glutton. But seriously, street food. Everything from fish cake (odeng, 오뎅), spicy rice cake (ddeokbokki, 쫄볶이), blood sausages (soondae, 순대), and even kebabs and the Korean version of tempura (twigim, 튀김) can be found in food trucks everywhere. Easy access food!

I can't wait to experience all of this again this coming October. Aaaaaaah! Our trip isn't for another 6 months but my friend and I have already come up with a list of possible guesthouses to stay at and a rough draft of our itinerary. No, we're not excited. NOT. AT. ALL.

Super Show 5 Live in Manila

Indeed, the best things in life are free. Especially when they happen to be VIP tickets to Super Junior's concert.

So, yes. I was able to watch Super Show 5 last night and the boys were beyond awesome. And how are they all more gorgeous in real life? I don't understand. There were countless of moments when Donghae or Sungmin or Kangin would be standing right in front of me and I would shout to my sister in awe, "Oh my gawd, how is he so pretty?" Like, seriously. All of them.

I don't even think I have words to explain the pure awesomeness of seeing k-pop idols live and that much in your face. This certainly wasn't my first k-pop concert. I've seen both Big Bang and CN Blue live. But I had upper box tickets to both those shows and even if they blew my mind with their talent it would probably have been a hundred times more mind-blowing if I had better seats. Seeing Super Junior just a few feet away from me brought the experience to a whole different level.

Really, I wasn't expecting VIP seats. The last time my friend got me free tickets, we got general admission passes to Lee Min-ho's concert. To have gotten that much would've been awesome already. So to have been given passes to stand 4 feet away from Donghae is just a little short of manna from heaven.

Also, this concert marked Heechul's return to doing Super Shows after his recent discharge from the army. Seeing how much the crowd loved him was a special moment. For both him and the fans, I'm sure. "Saranghaeyo, Kim Heechul! Wooyoo bichkkal, Kim Heechul!"

Super Show 5 might be within my reach

I've been self-pitying over the fact that a number of my favorite k-pop artists will be visiting the country and I'm going to be too poor to see them. Aside from the fact that I have bills to pay, I'm also saving up for my upcoming trip to Vietnam, and there are those Wicked musical tickets I've also been coveting. Concert tickets just isn't in the budget. So I had put on a brave front and said goodbye to the prospect of watching Super Junior's Super Show 5, Infinite's One Great Step, and 2PM Nichkhun's /Bench fanmeet - all of which are to take place one after the other on a weekly basis, from end of October to the second week of November.

They were right when they said be careful what you wish for. K-pop fans have begged concert promoters time and again to bring their favorite acts to the country, but the promoters have always said to sit back and relax and to wait for them one at a time. Bringing the acts to this part of Asia is not the hard part, the problem is in assuring the idols' agencies that the concert tickets will sell. Everyone wants to see their oppas, but not everyone can afford to, especially when they come in droves. And isn't that just too true?

Last week, I even thought to ask a friend, who previously got me into Lee Min-ho's concert, about the possibility of getting into Super Junior's concert later this week. This was going to be my last ditch effort to try and get my hands on some tickets. But I felt awkward having to ask her and so I stood my ground and resolved not to ask for something that clearly wasn't meant to be.

Over the weekend, news broke out that Heechul (one of my favorite Super Junior members who was recently discharged from the army) had rejoined the guys for the SM Town concert in Beijing, and that he's also set to join the group for Super Show 5 this week. Again, self-pity knows no bounds and I was sad for all of 5 minutes before pulling myself back together because, seriously, there wasn't anything I could do about it. So there I was, all ready to miss out on the biggest events of the year only to be reminded that the world is, indeed, a beautiful place.

Today, as is my daily morning routine, as soon as I woke up at the crack of dawn, I reached for my phone and checked Twitter. I had a direct message from last night from aforementioned friend and she had two succinct sentences for me: SuJu, this Thursday, 7pm MOA. Game ka? 

I replied and asked her if she was serious. It was 5 in the morning and I was freaking out. Though it was still dark, I couldn't go back to sleep over the sheer giddiness of possibly getting to watch Super Junior for free. It's 10 am now and I still haven't heard back from her so I don't know how legit this is. But oh. my. god.

The Kpop Superfan Member Test!

During last week's Kpop Music Monday on EYK, instead of doing their usual music video review, they put up this Kpop Superfan Test instead. And guess what? I was bored enough to do it.

So basically, they posted a list of all these kpop groups and how many members each one has and we're supposed to try and name all the members. One point for every correct answer. 

I tried my luck and got a 106/124. Which, according to their scoring system, tells me "101-119 points: Holy smokes, Kpop guru! What else do you know??!!"

I honest to goodness wrote down my answers without the use of Google. I swear it. And my answers are as follows:

The thing is though... I may know people's names, but not necessarily know who they are in the group specifically. Ask me to match the name to a face for groups like EXO and Teen Top and I'll be at a total loss. And like, I only know the name of B1A4's Gongchan because I see it on tumblr and it sounds like Gongcha, which is an awesome bubble tea place. I do not know how U-Kiss' Kiseop looks like either. Or the members of FT Island who are neither Hongki nor Jonghoon.

But also, I can't believe I missed out on some of the idols who I do know. Like, how can I not have remembered Baro? He's the only B1A4 member I actually know (thanks to We Got Married). And how is there only one other member of Infinite that I'm missing? And Kara! What's the name of the 5th girl from Kara? I know all their faces but can't quite remember her name. Damnit.

So guess who's watching her 2nd k-pop concert ever?

Ha. My friends and I finally decided, at almost the 11th hour, to go ahead and buy tickets to CN BLUE's upcoming concert.

The announcement that the 4 boys would be making their way to Manila for their 2013 Blue Moon World Tour came months in advance but I was not quite sure if I had the budget to watch more concerts this year. I had also been waiting for confirmation from a friend on whether or not she could get us discounted ticket. That option fell through so we had to buy our tickets at regular price. I don't mind, really. They weren't that expensive to begin with. It's just that with Fall Out Boy and Super Junior headed this way in a couple of months, I'm finding myself quite broke.

Anyway, the tickets have been bought. We're all set and the concert is next week. I'm guessing we were extremely lucky there were still tickets available. I just really had to make sure we got seats on Jonghyun's side of the stage. Ha.

I'm not CN BLUE's biggest fan but I still love them. And, damn, I'm excited.

A sort of introduction may be in order

Hi!

For over 10 years, I've blogged endlessly on different platforms and on different subjects. I've been on blogger, and livejournal, and tumblr... I've blogged about pop culture, music, books, fashion, food, and random personal things. And for the past year or so, I've been incessantly blogging and reblogging about my Korean obsessions on tumblr (I sure have spent my time wisely, eh?) and I wanted a better platform to let my thoughts out. Et voila!

I started this blog to accompany me on my journey deeper into the wilderness that is known as the Korean wave. May it be k-pop, k-dramas, k-movies, k-variety, anything and everything my Hallyu-obsessed inner fangirl may want to write about, it's going on here. There's only so much a micro-blogging site can do for me (although I love tumblr to bits). But from here on out, all my "formal" Hallyu-related blog entries will be found here. Properly labled and easily archived -- a k-library, if you will.

Feel free to spazz and flail with me. Our k-journey has just begun.
